According to NPD reports, 6.2% of the US population suffer from Narcissistic Personality disorder.

According to Dr. Paul Achman, around 5% of people are pathological liars.

That still means that 1 in 20 people you will encounter in your lifetime could be compulsively lying to you.

That’s why for your own safety it’s important to learn the common traits these people display and how you can notice them.

American Psycho movie told the story of a narcissist.

One of the biggest motivator for narcissistic people is having the world view them admirably, in a favorable way.

They want to have their ego stroked. They focus deeply on their image and how they’re perceived by others.

Narcissistic people are extremely driven to maintain this persona they have created for themselves and in this attempt, they will not hesitate to lie about anything that will enhance this persona.

Not only they will lie and but they will also hold onto those lies obsessively and won’t give up.

For normal people, lying or being caught lying can be an awfully shameful experience. Meanwhile, narcissistic people can continue to lie nonchalantly.

Need an example? Look at the Fyre Festival organizer who lied about buying the island where the festival was announced to happen from Pablo Escobar. When the news were out, the real owner of the island who had rented the island out to them broke it. Even long after criminal charges were pressed against him for fraud, he continued to lie about the festival and scammed other people.

Elizabeth Holmes, founder and CEO of Theranos, one of the Silicon Valley’s biggest disasters, frequently lied about having deep, baritone voice. She attempted to sound more assertive but her employees as well as several videos quickly demonstrated she was just impersonating.

Don’t assume that just because they’re calm that they are telling the truth.

When normal people get caught lying, they will stop their lies and apologize.

But narcissist people don’t give up on their lies.

They have an explanation for everything.

And they will continue to lie at all costs, to protect the persona, a fantasy self, they have created for themselves.

If you express your issues with their behavior, they will react irrationally and may label you a “hater” or plain jealous of them. And they can start attacking you back.

Dealing with a narcissist can be deeply hurtful for your mental wellbeing. If you have any doubts, make sure you see a professional or call Crisis Text Line.
