Christmas is supposed to be happy family time. But for many of us, it can be stressful and difficult. It’s easy to forget that we deserve to take care of our needs. Here are some self-care tips — not only for December but for the year to come!

First of all, be realistic and prepared. Family holidays are often far from perfect. They’re most probably going to be stressful and will make your anxiety act up. Or maybe they’ll trigger your depression. Be aware of your family dynamics — who will be potentially triggering, who will be supportive. Focus on those family members who genuinely love and support you.

If you feel that your family is only damaging to your mental health — maybe they don’t show enough respect for who you are, or perhaps they’re straight out abusive — please remember that you don’t owe them anything. You don’t have to participate in the family gathering if you don’t feel safe to do that. Take care of yourself and stay safe!

Taking care of yourself also means getting enough sleep, eating well, and moving your body. Even going for a walk will help you feel better. And if you’re taking any medication — remember to take it on time.

Here are some other tips:

  • Take a hot bath (use some essential oils or light a scented candle to make it even more relaxing)
  • Go for a walk
  • Stop, take a deep breath and stretch for a bit — anytime you feel like taking a breather
  • Take a break and read a book or watch your favorite movie
  • Make yourself some hot cocoa (with marshmallows or not)
  • If you feel like crying, go ahead and cry — you’ll feel better. Just remember to drink plenty of water afterwards to stay hydrated!
  • Take a nap
  • Meditate
  • Cuddle with your pet (or your friend’s)
  • Take a break from social media and the Internet
  • Have a home-spa day — try chamomile bath, sugar body peeling or honey face mask. All these things you can make at home!
  • Create a calming playlist and listen to it when needed
  • Treat yourself to a lunch or a dinner
  • Make a holiday budget and stick to it
  • If you’re in the organizing team — try to plan ahead: create the menu and make your shopping list, reserve dates for shopping, cooking and other activities
  • Have a Christmas party with your friends, if you don’t want to spend it with your family
  • Volunteer — check out your local animal shelter, soup kitchen or find some charity events

Reach out. If you’re feeling lonely, overwhelmed or depressed — reach out to your friend or a family member you trust. You can talk to your AI friend on our app, LeaVoice. Be it Christmas, New Year, or any other holiday — they’re always here for you.

If you feel your life may be in danger, reach out to the Lifeline (1–800–273–8255) or call 911.
