Today, almost every human owns a smartphone. It means constant access to information. It can be overwhelming, however. Our brain can’t differentiate between important and useless information and absorbs it all.

I want to introduce you to three AUIs and how they change human cognition. Our brains, you see, are incredibly plastic.

The plasticity of the brain

Our brains aren’t elastic but plastic. It means that the brain continues to change. Is it good or bad? It can have adverse effects in modern society choke-full of technology. It’s just a tool and can improve our lives, but many technology companies don’t care about how our brains are affected by the technology they provide.

I believe that the knowledge of cognitive science and neuroscience should be standard in companies developing the technology. Let’s not forget about morality, as well. Technology may be a blessing or a curse, depending on how it’s used.

The irritation: our brain rewritten

Even as adults, we still keep the plasticity of our brains. The Internet can rewrite the human mind and make it more inattentive and impatient.

I believe AUIs will help us to focus on important things and also keep us motivated.

What is an AUI?

Attentive User Interface

Our brain absorbs information in 83% from sight and only 11% from hearing. Then again, homo sapiens developed their minds by using language. Hearing is very crucial for us.

Take smartphones: you may miss a notification when the silent mode is on. But it’ll be much harder to overlook when the sound is on.

Anticipative User Interface

We absorb so much information every day that it’s hard to process and understand it. I don’t want, then, to spend so much of this precious processing power on minor things, such as checking when should I leave to be punctual or to remember all things I have to bring to one of the meetings.

Some of these problems can be monitored by personal assistants, such as Alexa, thanks to the big data collected by companies like Facebook, Amazon, Apple, and Google. But the potential abuse of our personal data is very real.

Ambient User Interface

Ambient User Interface means understanding the environment or mood — it’s called sentiment recognition. Humans are capable of rationality, but the truth is, we’re mostly creatures of emotion. But how do we communicate emotionally with an AI? Once we’re capable of this, the world in ‘Her’ is no longer fiction. With AUIs, it’s possible to take advantage of the plasticity characteristic of our brain and help it reach its potential.
